Rhinoceros in Church

No, this is not AI. It is in fact an actual inflatable rhinoceros installed in the center of an 11th century monastery in Germany. The Kunstmuseum Magdeburg in Magdeburg to be precise. [ map location ]

It’s a great example of how something whimsical at face value can have a big physical and cultural messaging impact.

The rhinoceros in European history is linked to power and conquest. And changes the atmosphere of the monastery from large and cavernous, to small and more intimate. It changes the sound in the hall. The flow of air through the columns.

Itamar Gov created a very effective work with this rhino. It is something interesting for people of all ages. And a starting point for many different types of conversations. Both fun and lighthearted. And serious and historically introspective.

The Rhino in the Room installation will be on display through the middle of July if you are in the neighborhood.
