“I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.”

Andy Warhol said of Campbell’s soup

In total there are 32 soup cans that Warhol meticulously painted by hand. One for each of the 32 flavors Campbell’s offered. Each painted can identical to the others except for the name and the fleur de lys row across the bottom.

Initially all 32 paintings were displayed together in a grid to mimic the cans stacked on shelves. But Tomato was the first flavor sold by Campbell’s in 1887.

After completing the Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol switched to a photo-silkscreen process to create other iconic works that mimicked advertisements.

“I don’t think art should be only for the select few,” he claimed, “I think it should be for the mass of the American people.”
