Calder Mobile

The mobiles by Alexander Calder always speak to me. The unstructured balance. The dynamic motion responding to the environment. The fact that you will never see the same version of the mobile twice. Nor will the people standing next to you see the same version you see.

The version of the mobile you see depends on the temperature and air currents in the room. The collective breathing of everyone in the room contributes to the direction and speed that the mobile rotates.

And in turn the shadows it casts depend on how the mobile responds to those environmental factors.

That is life. There are known elements and pieces that hang together in a structure. But how they turn and flow is entirely out of our control. We influence that structure, but not in any way that we can control.
