Radiohead recorded one of my favorite songs of all time. But for the life of me, I have not understood what puts them in that group of bands that exists above the fray. Popular but not. Legendary but not massively. Contemporary yet throwback.
This episode of Earworm by Estelle Caswell on Vox answers it for me. This is the kind of information that completely changes the light in which you are looking at something. Akin to looking at a painting lit in blue light and then switching to natural light through skylights.
Radiohead knew 99% of their fans would not notice this. In fact, they would not hear it and even misinterpret the song. That they went to the trouble of this complexity puts them on a different level.
